We all met in front of the little purple house that Nick and Mai-yan used to call home. Our families and friends were all there to send us off. Our friend Jamal decided to join us for the first leg of the tour to San Francisco.

As we were getting all our gear loaded on the bikes, Nick gathered everyone together. Next thing we knew, he took a ring out of his pocket and proposed. And of course she said yes! After some hugs and tears, we were finally ready to begin our journey.

John and Minnie came along on their tandem up to Sunset Blvd. I think they wished they were going further (well, John at least).

Everything was going along great until Jamal’s front wheel got caught on Mai-yan’s trailer and down he went. Seemed like nothing too major at first, just a couple of scuffed up panniers and some minor road rash. After further inspection, we discovered that his front wheel was totally compromised.

We decided the best option would be for him to try to hitch a ride into Ventura to get a new wheel, while we rode on to McGrath State Beach. So off we went. Unbeknownst to us, Jamal rode the twenty miles into Ventura and got himself a new wheel. He rolled up to camp just in time for dinner.
