Day 27 - Charleston to Honeyman State Park, Dune City

May 29, 2009

54 miles

Early on, we had to cross the bridge in North Bend over Coos Bay. Cyclists must walk their bikes across the bridge on a narrow sidewalk. This isn’t a big deal on a regular bike, but it’s a different story with the trikes. Everything was fine until we got to the midpoint of the bridge where part of the sidewalk was obstructed because of construction. We had to unload the trikes and carry them across.

We camped at Honeyman State Park in a grove of pine trees surrounded by dunes. Huge mounds of drifting sand cover the forest over many years, leaving a strange landscape of forests, lakes and sand. It’s quite a sight to see since our experience with dunes has been either at the beach or the desert.

We met some nice backpackers who were going from Idaho to San Francisco for a music festival. Nick and Kismat befriended them and they chatted about guitars and music.

Some of you might know that we’re working on a camping cookbook. We made an Indian-inspired dish that was quite yummy — tofu, bell peppers, and onions stir-fried in a creamy tomato and ginger sauce. We served it over rice with pita bread. This is a top contender for the cookbook.
