Day 3 - Refugio to Lompoc

May 5, 2009

36 miles

Today was the start of the winds. We knew to expect north-to-south winds, but we were hoping the wind gods would be with us at least until Oregon. Not quite! We encountered gusts that made us feel like feathers. It was manageable until we got to the Gaviota Pass, where we had to go through a tunnel that was clearly not designed with cyclists in mind. We had to walk the bikes on a narrow sidewalk through the tunnel as semi trucks zoomed by.

After some rolling hills and more wind, we finally made it to Lompoc. Being that it was Cinco De Mayo, we decided to have a Mexican feast along with a 12 pack of Dos Equis. It was well deserved!
