Going off the AC map
Today was a great day of riding. We decided to deviate from the Adventure Cycling map and ride down highway 101. It was a great decision. We rode on the eastern edge of the Olympia National Park. It's a lush rain forest with giant fir trees with monster ferns below the trees and also some gigantic mushrooms. The magnificent forest borders the Hood Canal. So we had the forest on our right and the canal on our left. What a sight, it was a 10!
Yesterday was quite an interesting day of navigation. The AC maps were !@#$%%^ frustrating to use. I now appreciate the Woman Tours cue sheets. If it hadn't been for my garmin gps I would have missed the ferry. Jean was there with the car loaded on the boat and it was about to cast off. I rolled in 3 minutes before they sailed.
When we arrived in Port Townsend it started raining. We wandered around town in the rain. The town is quite a charming place. Many of the buildings reminded me of the old stone buildings in the midwest. We got great fish tacos from a local Mexican food cart and took them to the campground. We ate our tacos in the car before we set the tent up in the rain. Jean slept in the car, that way we only had one wet soggy tent to deal with in the morning. Luckily it was not raining so we could enjoy our coffee outside among the giant trees and ferns. We drove to Quilcene where Jean started to ride. I drove to Shelton and rode back until we met up, then we rode in together. It started raining big time. It didn't take us long to decide LET'S FIND A MOTEL. So that's how we ended up in the Centralia Motel 6
It's pouring as I write this and forecasted to pour for 2 more days. So we're to the Portland Motel 6. We hope to meet Elle, maybe she can take us for a rain ride in Portland. We hope to discover some of that great Portland bike culture.
