WE DECLARED A DAY OFF
aWE DECLARED A DAY OFF
Today we decided to rest our bodies and bikes and give the car a work out. We traveled from Arcata south through Eureka, Ferndale, and along the Avenue of Giants. We are spending Sunday and Monday nights at the Burlington State Park Campground. It's set among old growth redwoods and only a short walk to the Eel river.
After leaving the KOA this morning we drove to the Samoa Jetty outside of Eureka. Large surf was crashing across the breakwater. According to a local surfer, this was the first winter swell. The waves were a good 7 feet!
After Eureka it was on to Ferndale. The town has a collection of restored old Victorian houses and buildings. We walked down Main Street until we found the Kinetic Bike exhibit. Each year during Memorial Day Weekend they race artistic "bicycles" 34 miles from Ferndale to Arcata.

This sailboat is heading out to the 8 foot swells.

Imagine riding one of these contraptions in a 34 mile bike race!
