Why bicycle ?

September 8, 2010

I consider bicycle the best way to travel I know: in term of environmental and money costs, for its flexibility, and simplicity

1/ Compared to bicycle, most transports are extremely expensive, consider the food for a horse, the fuel for a car, the space taken by highways, train stations, rail tracks, and airports... and the impact on environment they have, think about the jewel of our globallized and unconscious civilization: plane. I wish aliens come soon to present us better solutions!! For my part I will step for the first time of my life in another continent than Europe with the help of my little leg muscles ONLY. Yes I can! No plane yet... at least not directly.

Look: A lot of the items I ordered are shipped over seas, so here we get back with plane. I am not in the vehicle but the tools I used have been in. By the way do you know we European are ripped off considering the costs of most outdoor gear, what costs 100$ costs 150€, insane! -let's go on with this grumpy french moment- A T-shirt made in Bangladesh I pay 5€ was made by a 14 years old kid, while I'm twice that age and taking a comfortable life pause. We westerners have a lot of luck, and we don't realize it, acting as spoiled children. To get back to the environmental issue, if the real impact on environment was included in the prices of services and goods, we would not find absurdities such as apples from New-Zealand in Northern Emisphere shops... or ski tracks in Dubai.

2/ Other advantage of bicycle travel is its pace: fast enough to cover some distance and slow enough to discover the land, feeling the distance through your tired legs at the end of the day! Depending on conditions, one can cycle up to 150km a day, while enjoying the scenery. Besides it gets you closer to locals, when you stop to replenish your water bottle, and I heard many interesting stories about how hospitable people are. Looking forward to be in the story !

Bicycle travel, a good way to meet locals.

3/ In bicycle travel, I've always felt a healthy routine taking place. Getting to sleep, well fed and tired around sunset, standing up with the sun, being outside all day : natural lights! How many of us spend most of our days in natural light?? outside?? and in front of a screen? haha! No wonder why we lost connection with nature, living in an artificially regulated environment. Not only will I be warmed daily by the sunlight, but camping will allow me to connect closer with the moon cycles, which we could replace the meaningless months with -have a look at the Maya calendar about it!- . Reducing the influence of ticks, clicks and clocks, only the smooth changes of the moonlight. And the stars, I have not seen them much since I live in cities. Feeling and following the rhythms of nature are a great way to start feeling and following your self/Self/soul, following grandmother Earth and grandfather Sun, as say native American. A key to a simpler life, peace and harmony.
